The Birth Doula Training Workshop Requirements:
- Attend the 3 day labor support professional training
- Complete course content evaluation
Two other requirements for Birth Doula Certification that could be met are:
1. Breastfeeding Class
2. Required readings for DONA certification:
One of the following:
- The Complete Book of Pregnancy & Childbirth by S. Kitzinger
- Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Simkin, Whalley & Keppler
- The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: The Ultimate Guide to Conception, Birth and Everything In Between, Douglas
One of the following:
- The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Goer
- Gentle Birth Choices: A Guide to Making Informed Decisions About Birthing Centers, Birth Attendants, Water Birth, Home Birth, Hospital Births, by Harper
- Ina May's Guide to Natural Childbirth, by Gaskin
- An Easier Childbirth: A Mother's Guide for Birthing Normally, by Goer

- The Breastfeeding Answer Book, by Mohrbacher, Stock, & Newton
- The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, by Newman & Pitman
- The Nursing Mother's Companion, by Huggins & Lawrence
The following two books are required:
- The Birth Partner by Simkin
- The Doula Book by Klaus, Klaus & Kennell
This course is approved for 19.2 contact hours by Illinois Nurses Association Continuing Education Approver Unit, which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
This program trains the participant as a labor support professional through the Academy of Certified Birth Educations. This program is DONA International approved. Completion of these course requirements fufills two requirements toward DONA certification (1. Birth Doula Training Course, 2. Required Readings).
